    • The earliest civilisation of the Indian Subcontinent is called the Harappan, Indus, or Indus-Sarasvatī Civilisation.
    • The quotation on page 85 describes the Harappan society as peaceful, balanced and based on mutual accommodation rather than exploitation.
    • A civilisation is an advanced stage of society with features like government, cities, writing, organised trade, crafts, agriculture and cultural systems.
    • The Indus-Sarasvatī civilisation flourished between 2600–1900 BCE (timeline shown on page 87).
    • The plains of Punjab, Sindh and the lost river Sarasvatī (Ghaggar-Hakra) supported early settlements due to fertile soil.
    • The civilisation began when villages grew into towns, and towns into planned cities around 2600 BCE.
    • Harappa was the first excavated site (1920–21), which is why its people are called Harappans.
    • The cities had advanced town-planning: wide streets, well-laid houses, fortifications, upper and lower towns (page 91–92).
    • Great Bath of Mohenjo-daro was an important public structure, possibly used for ceremonial or ritual activities.
    • Water management was a major achievement: covered drains, private bathrooms, wells and huge stone-built reservoirs (e.g., Dholavira). (pages 94–96)
    • The Harappans practised advanced agriculture, growing wheat, barley, millets, rice, vegetables and the earliest cotton in Eurasia. (page 96)
    • They domesticated animals and consumed dairy, meat and fish; pottery analysis shows turmeric, ginger and banana were used. (page 97)
    • They had active internal and external trade with Mesopotamia, Oman and Iran using land, river and sea routes (pages 97–99).
    • Seals made of steatite carried animal figures and symbols — probably used for trade identification and record-keeping. (page 99)
    • Harappan art included beads, pottery, bronze tools, games, shell bangles, figurines like the Dancing Girl and ‘Priest King’. (pages 100–101)
    • The civilisation declined around 1900 BCE due to climate change, drying of the Sarasvatī River and reduced agricultural output. (pages 102–103)
    • The Harappan culture did not disappear completely — many technologies and cultural ideas continued into later Indian civilisation.
