Lesson- 4. The Treasure Within

EXERCISE

Q.1 Is it likely that someone who is original and intelligent does not do very well at school? Should such a learner be called a failure? If not, why not?

Answer- School or board examinations do not test intelligence. They test only how much a student knows about the facts and figures, formulas other information given in textbook. Some students are better at remembering those facts and figures and formulas than others. They get better marks even if they do not understand the application of those formulas in real life situations. Some students grasp concepts, and eve go beyond them. But they do not fare well in the examinations. Besides this, our examinations want us to do well in the all subjects. Some students are good at one thing, but hopelessly bad at other. In life their talent makes them achievers. Einstein was not good at some subjects at school because he could not remember some facts and figures. His teachers and principal thought he would never do well in the life. But he has been the greatest scientist of his time. Indeed, such a learner is not a failure.

Q.2 Who, in your view, is an ‘unusual’ learner?

Answer- In my opinion, an unusual learner is one who tries to understand concepts. One who in critical. One who does not accept things mechanically but applies his mind.

Q.3 What can schools do to draw out the best in unusual learners? Suggest whatever seems reasonable to you.

Answer- Schools should provide unusual learners opportunities to express their talents. They should be given a lot of freedom. Such students should be allowed to do something creative. They can present projects of their own choice. There should be different clubs where these learners can find opportunities to show the best in them.
